great statue of Amenhotep III in Luxor

Egyptian archaeologists discovered one of the largest statues of King Amenhotep III in a temple built in his honor in the city of Luxor in southern Egypt today announced the Department of Antiquities of that country.

The statue of the pharaoh, who lived in 14 century BC, measures 13.5 meters in height, but is broken into seven major blocks and their head is missing, the ministry said in a statement.

A team of archaeologists is now working on cleaning, restoration and collection of parts sculpture, while others focus on locating the missing head, he said.

The effigy is one of the two that were erected in the north hall of the temple, one of the largest in Luxor but was destroyed by a powerful earthquake in the year 27.

Along with that of Amenhotep III, the archaeologists found two statues, one representing the ancient Egyptian god of wisdom, Thoth, and a small statue of Sekhmet, goddess of war with lion's head symbolized the strength and power.

Amenhotep III was one of the Egyptian kings of the famous 18th Dynasty, which ruled Egypt from 1550 to 1292 BC, and grandfather of Tutankhamun, also known as the 'boy pharaoh. "
