At a time now I have watched with some sadness, apathy and frustration, how some of the most active mailing lists I participate in are going to hell. Causes some do not know, but I can hazard a few:
- general disinterest by Theme addressed. Rarely is interesting news, and yes most of the time of refried banal anecdotes, off-topics, etc.
- Participation restricted to the "usual suspects" and to any other part clueless that looks wrong. Skeptics continue watching navel and our "virtual meetings" seem more boring bar gatherings for discussion and sometimes (in) formation. We are what we are, no more. Imagine what the trolls do not even bother us ...
- Technical problems, non-members of the list, and that usually translates into slow updates or mysterious disappearances of messages.
And I say: do not be more appropriate and less boring other form of communication, such as a public forum or a chat? Advantages and disadvantages:
- THERE In the forums sections. For many of us would be quite comfortable going directly to, for example, updates of entries in the Critical Network if there is a section ad hoc, or the thread for the topic Evolution and Creationism, for example, and not just to see how messages on mailing lists are a succession of new posts notices, and little else.
- Structuring threads or subjects. This would make navigation more direct and agile, and avoid having to swallow almost by obligation discussions or topics that interest us.
- Huge formal and aesthetic possibilities.
- updated almost immediately, especially in the case of chats (obvio. .. gn gn gn). You can check at a glance if you have written replies to your comments, or if new threads were opened, and so on.
- Both formats, forums and chat, are very difficult to trolls.
- the forums are usually more "findable" on Internet mailing lists, which would win (I think) in participation, new members, and most importantly: ADVERTISING . I personally
the format that attracts me is the chat, immediately. The Twitter that, at his side, a carraguza.
throw the challenge and the glove, especially aimed at computer scientists and programmers among us (you know who I mean specifically, of course) because I think it would be a breakthrough and a great utility to the cause (joder. ..). Seriously.
